Wedding Videos – Behind The Scenes with Tin Bird Productions

Tin Bird Productions Lian Morrison

This is a behind the scenes shot of me (Lian) taken by Sally Le Drew of Pictures By Sally LeDrew. She is excellent to work with for anyone looking for a photographer, and her photos are amazing! Here I am working on Valerie & Stephen Brown’s wedding video in October 2014, fun times!! 🙂

Weddings are great to work on, you get a lot of creative freedom and you make a product that your clients will keep and cherish forever. Each video means a lot to the people you film them for as well as their friends and families. When else do you have someone following you and your family around with a camera capturing a milestone in your lives when you are all celebrating together? That’s essentially what I like most about filming weddings, how important they are to a client. When you work on bigger productions, there isn’t much of a personal feel or connection to the film/commercial. Also, there are a lot of restrictions over what you can/can’t do and also how things are done. Usually there are a lot of people you are working with (which can be a good thing) but it’s just not the environment I prefer. I like deciding shots, filming real reactions of real people and being part of something that means so much to someone else.

Now that doesn’t mean that weddings can’t be stressful. They can be at times but at the end of the day, the couple is getting married surrounded by their loved ones and nothing can change that. Each wedding is different from the next and it shows in all the videos ( I couldn’t do the same shots for each wedding if I tried). I like to keep it fairly simple with my camera movements and editing, I don’t want my shots to look too trendy so that in 10 years I will look at them and think “…what was I thinking.” I have made enough mistakes with my hair and clothes in my adolescent years to make up for that. Timeless videos are key for me!

So those are my thoughts on making wedding videos, I’m sure it’s a topic I will blog about more in the future. Thanks for reading! -Lian

Phillip & Rebecca’s Video

Tin Bird Productions had the pleasure of doing the videography for Rebecca & Phillip’s wedding in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland. We had a great day and were surrounded by wonderful people and beautiful scenery! Rebecca and Phillip are very in love and we think it shows in the video! Enjoy!

Wedding Shows in 2015

We are excited to be in our first wedding shows in Newfoundland next year! So far we are booked for the The Ultimate Bridal Show (in St. John’s Feb 15th), as well as The Devotion Wedding Show (in Mount Pearl March 8th). We will be promoting our wedding videography by playing some of our favourite videos in our own booth so if you attending the event, pop by and say hello!

Wedding shows are great for anyone that is planning on getting married in the near future. It’s the perfect way to see the different products and services wedding vendors offer in your area. Typically you will see photographers, videographers, bridal boutique owners, decorators, florists, events planners, venue representatives AND our personal favourites.. cake decorators with samples of their different flavours!! These events are super fun to bring along your mother, sister and MOH to shop around for your wedding. If you are getting married soon, we recommend coming to one of these shows in Newfoundland and see what vendors in your area have to offer you for your special day.

Our very first wedding anniversary video is here!

We had a blast filming the 10th wedding anniversary for Doug & Joanne Phillips! We even got to incorporate their old wedding video with new footage from their present lives together. It’s a great way to show how their family has grown. Since getting married on October 2nd, 2014, Doug and Joanne have added 2 new additions to their family – Maggie and Jack! The whole day was a lot of fun and we think the kids enjoyed it a lot too! Joanne put on her wedding dress (which Maggie was super excited about) and everyone dressed up and we went out for a day of family fun! Have a look at the video, featuring the song “You’re My Best Friend” by a very talented band in Newfoundland called The Once!

Famous Behind-the-Scenes Movie Tidbits

One thing is for sure, a lot of work goes into making a movie, big or small. It’s no surprise that things go on during productions that viewers would never be aware of it it weren’t for crew and cast letting the public know. While browsing on Reddit I saw a list of some of the behind-the-scenes movie facts that users submitted and I have compiled a list of my favourites to share! Enjoy 🙂

1- In Goodfellas, the spaghetti they’re eating was cooked by Scorsese’s mother. Submitted by HoboChique

2- While filming Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Bella, the Neapolitan mastiff that played Fang, got very protective of Daniel Radcliffe, and would jump in front of him whenever the animatronic spider for Aragog would come out to defend him, resulting in then having to refilm the scene multiple times. Submitted by addytude529

3- In The Shawshank Redemption, there’s a scene where a guy feeds a maggot to a crow.
The American Humane Association made them find a maggot that had died of natural causes to feed to the crow. They wouldn’t have given the “no animals were harmed in the making of this film” at the end if they hadn’t. Submitted by Noah-R

4- In Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers when Aragon, Gimli, and Legolas are approaching the pile of smoldering and dismembered corpses looking for Pipin and Mary, Vigo Mortensen kicks a helmeted Orc head and screams, thinking the hobbits are dead and gone.
It’s a really good scream and 100% authentic. When Mortensen kicked the head/helmet he broke two of his toes. He used the pain and stayed in character. They kept the scene for the movie. Submitted by UCM Coyote

5- While looking for a tattered coat for the character playing The Wizard in the Wizard of Oz, a costume assistant bought one from a second hand store. When the actor put the coat on he turned the pocket inside out – written in the pocket was the name L.Frank Baum who is the author of The Wizard of Oz books. Baum’s widow later identified the coat as actually having belonged to her husband. Submitted by Naweezy

6- In Alien Resurrection, Sigourney Weaver really did make that no look, over the shoulder basketball shot. Ron Perlman almost blew the take because he was so surprised! Submitted by ry100

7- The movie “Wayne’s World” was filmed in less than a month, because the equipment was all borrowed from someone else.
Also, Dana Carvey actually didn’t know the lyrics to the Bohemian Rhapsody. He just mouthed along as the scene was shot. Submitted by Frye the Cat

8- In Psycho, Janet Leigh’s infamous shower scene was filmed on the second take. The first, she did it and the water was average temperature. The second, the water was turned to freezing and it caught her off guard enough that her scream is real. Submitted by my_Favorite_post

Elvis is in the house!

I had the pleasure of attending Thane Dunn’s concert at Holy Heart Auditorium last week to shoot some promotional footage of his act. For anyone that doesn’t know who Thane Dunn is, he is a professional Elvis impersonator from Moncton, New Brunswick. Thane has won multiple awards including the #1 title at the world’s largest international Elvis tribute competition in 2009 as well as the #1 spot at The Elvis Gospel Competition in 2012. If you have ever seen Elvis impersonators before, I can assure you, this guy will put them all to shame. He looks, sounds and acts like Elvis.

After the show when we were interviewing some of the audience members, a lot of big Elvis fans raved about how you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between Thane and Elvis himself. They said it’s like going back in time. I was never old enough to see Elvis perform in person but I can believe it from watching videos of Elvis perform back in the 60s. I think Thane’s act would give momentum to the “Elvis faked his death” conspiracy (outside of the fact that Elvis would be 79 if he were alive today). Just take a look at these two photos. The photo on the top is Thane and the photo on the bottom is the original king in all his blinged out glory. See what I mean?

If you are an Elvis fan, keep an eye out for Thane’s next show in your area. He is coming back to St. John’s Jan. 8 & 9, and you can buy tickets here! Thane also has a Facebook Page that is updated frequently as well as a website that lists his showtimes. Even if you aren’t a huge Elvis fan, the show is still great and most anyone can appreciate a craft as well-honed as Thane’s.

Tin Bird Productions very FIRST wedding video!

Well here it is the finished product! I had the opportunity to do Melissa and Blair Pelley’s wedding video and I had a great time doing so! We even got to visit some beautiful horses that work for the RCMP, although they were trying pretty hard to eat the bouquets haha

I’m really happy with the result, it’s not hard to do a good video when you’re working with a couple as in love as these two. 🙂
